Nine inch Ford differential parts and specs.

Is your 9" Traction-Loc doing the peg leg thing? Are you ready to go to the spring swap meet and pick up a used Traction-Loc to replace your open differential? Then one of the first things on your agenda is a disassembly and inspection of the unit before installing it. Traction-Loc or Traction-Lock (have seen it both ways) is a patented name owned by Ford Motor Co. In no case should this unit be, confused wth or referred to as a positrac. That name belongs to some other company and has nothing to do with Ford cars. Unless of course you call your C-6 a Turbo 400 because it's an automatic. Traction-Loc s are very reliable units, but high mileage, and server usage can cause breakage and wear to the internal parts. The most common concern is broken or burnt clutch pieces. Contrary to popular belief the Traction-Loc "is" designed to slip while cornering. Repeated applications of horsepower while in a turn creates tremendous amounts of heat in the clutch pack, causing burnt, worn, and warped plates. Eventually it will no longer hold in straight line acceleration. Hopefully the following list will make your life a little easier while servicing a sick Traction-Loc. I compiled this list to help my parts guy out, it saves a lot of time. These are the most commonly serviced pieces. The parts with Ford part numbers are only available from Ford in most cases, the after market part numbers are much cheaper to buy from an auto parts store or bearing wholesaler (Bearings, Inc.) and will contain an equal quality part.
